In 1914, the zipper was invented, Wrigley Field was built, and the Edward Long Chemical Company was founded in Chicago, supplying flavors, colors and fragrances to bakeries in the Midwest U.S. Today, Edlong is a leading flavor house, and is proudly different than all the rest, being focused exclusively on dairy flavors.

For our customers, this focus allows us to be an extraordinarily knowledgeable development partner in solving difficult product formulation challenges. We offer the broadest selection of dairy profiles in the industry along with customized flavor and applications development. We do this in a way that, quite simply, revolves entirely around our customers. Reliable and responsive service, the kind that is discerning in managing both typical and unique needs, is fundamental to how we work. We didn’t get that way overnight or without great leadership.

A quick look back:

In 1953, Jack Bremner purchased the company and we became the Edlong Chemical Company. In 1964, Gene Rondenet, a chemist by training, joined the company. He brought technical depth to the company, along with an uncommon talent: practical use of his technical knowledge and creativity to solve real commercial problems. He developed the first commercially viable, cost-effective, concentrated cheese flavor. This and other dairy flavor innovations quickly became important ingredients in expanding the range of flavors available in the snack food segment, and Edlong’s future was on the horizon: dairy flavors.

With subsequent development of a series of proprietary process and ingredient innovations in the 1970s, Edlong became the industry leader in dairy flavor emulsion technology. As the decade closed, we still manufactured fruit and savory flavors.

Into the early 1990s, the company expanded, adding new production and processing capabilities. And the future had arrived: dairy flavors became the single strategic focus of the business, allowing us to effectively target key industry segments and develop flavors for specific applications. With this repositioning came a new company name: Edlong Dairy Flavors.

In 2004, Edlong was honored as the industry-recognized supplier of premier dairy flavors and ingredients, based on service and quality. Edlong has reclaimed this title year after year, and although we are extremely proud, we remind ourselves that every single customer touch point is an opportunity to deliver our best.

In 2007, Laurette Rondenet-Smith, Gene’s youngest daughter, became Edlong’s principal owner, President and CEO. Edlong is a Women’s Business Enterprise-certified organization and, through selected organizations, actively supports efforts that improve the nutrition and quality of life for children and their families worldwide.

In 2013, we announced our new name, Edlong Dairy Technologies, complete with a new logo to accompany it. The shift reflects how we are increasing our value to global customers through expanded capabilities in food ingredient technologies. It positions us for growth in food ingredient technologies but remains true to our core competency in dairy, helping us further differentiate our products and showing our commitment to investing in solutions that best serve our customers.

Today, Edlong Dairy Technologies assists customers at every stage of product development, offering technical collaboration, formulation expertise and customized solutions. We develop and market Cheese, Butter, Milk & Cream, Cultured, Sweet Dairy and Functional Dairy flavors. Our flavors are Kosher-certifiable and are available in a variety of solubilities and forms. Nearly half our product line is Natural, and include several that are Non-Dairy, Non-GMO, Kosher Pareve Certified, Whole Foods-Compliant and/or Organic Compliant.
