Senior Food Scientist—Europe
Global Sensory Manager
Joined Edlong in November, 2012
How would you describe your typical day?
I work in Ireland in the R&D Applications Lab. Every day is different, but it typically includes a mix of lab and office work. In the lab, I work on a variety of projects for customers, which can include sending flavor samples, screening our flavors for sugar or fat reduction, commodity replacement, flavor improvement, cost reduction or matching a target product. I also frequently travel to participate in tradeshows, customer presentations and meetings to give sensory support.
What’s your favorite part about working for Edlong?
The people—both in the U.S. and in Europe. I have made some really good friendships. I also love how diverse our work in the lab can be. We can work on beverages, chocolates, cereal bars, snacks, sauces—anything and everything.
Most of my time I communicate in English, and so I am always learning new Irish idioms with my colleague Anne-Marie, but sometimes I also practice my Spanish with colleagues and customers.
Is there a project, event, etc. that sticks out in your mind or a favorite memory that you might have from your time here?
There is one memory that I will never forget. During my visit to our Applications Lab in Mexico, I worked with a customer from Brazil who provided precious help when I had a problem with my first pregnancy and had to be taken to the hospital. I also remember dearly all the support and help I had from my colleagues from Mexico and the U.S. during that time. Despite being a terrifying moment, it was a great lesson of life, and my son is now three-and-a-half years old.
How does what you do impact Edlong’s customers?
I support our customers by working together with them on their projects, and providing solutions to their problems using our flavors.
How does your work make Edlong better?
As part of the Applications team, I always try to go that extra mile to deliver customer satisfaction. I have also contributed to the development and improvement of our sensory department.
I love food and my three-course meals, but above all, what I really love is dessert—especially anything with dulce de leche or condensed milk. It’s just delicious!
Your favorite thing to do for fun?
Going to the beach with my sons, playing in the sand with them and swimming in the sea or pool.
What’s one thing your coworkers might not know about you?
My father is an alternative rock vocalist in a Portuguese band.
Any other anecdotes, or an interesting story about your time at Edlong?
It was right before Christmas and we were expecting it to be a quiet week before a nice break. Instead, we received an urgent request from a salesperson for a huge potential opportunity for masking a high-protein beverage. In the lab, most of the people were on vacation—only myself and my colleague Lori were available. I remember it being a hard week of work and we needed to present great solutions and a quick turnaround to beat our competitors. The first submission was a success, and led to a project with lots of future work over the next few months.
