Applications Manager, Europe
Title, location/department, when you started at Edlong.
My title is Applications Manager. I work in Edlong’s Ireland office, and I joined the company in November, 2012.
How would you describe your typical day?
When everything goes to plan, my typical day is split across tasting in the early morning, lab work in the late morning and afternoon, followed by paperwork in the evening. With the time difference here in Ireland, we need to manage our time very efficiently so we are available to communicate with our colleagues in the U.S. and Mexico when they start at 1pm our time. Being organized and flexible helps us cope when we need to travel or deal with urgent inquiries.
What’s your favorite part about working here?
I love how international we are. Even though we are spread across Europe, the U.S. and Mexico we still work very closely together. We are exposed to different cultures, lifestyles, perspectives and most importantly for me—foods. I can’t even tell you how many new foods I have tried, thanks some of our Mexican colleagues. And from my time in the U.S. I have even gotten my family hooked on Thin Mints® and Samoas® cookies from the Girl Scouts. Not one of my finer addictions, but they are impossible to get in Ireland!!!!
Is there a project, event, etc. that sticks out in your mind or a favorite memory that you might have from your time here?
My first IFT. I had never attended or even had to prepare for a show on such a large scale. I loved how we all got to develop new products and had several tastings to pick what would go forward to the show. When we had chosen our final demos, we had to prepare them to serve to thousands of people. It was brilliant to see how much hard work, organization and time goes into these shows.
How does what you do impact Edlong’s customers?
In applications, I feel that we translate flavors. We put them into the application that is most relevant to our customers so that they can taste them and understand how a flavor can work for them.
How does your work make Edlong better?
We all contribute to making Edlong better, and we all have our parts to play in the overall success of the company. We are very passionate about food and this is evident in our products and flavors.
Unfortunately for my waistline, I love nearly all foods. But if I had to pick, it would probably be shellfish and dilisk—a type of Irish seaweed that’s used in cooking or enjoyed as a snack.
One thing your co-workers might not know about you?
I hate eggs! It’s probably why I like working on vegan products!!
Your favorite thing to do for fun?
I don’t have a favorite. I am very much driven by my mood. Being from Ireland, the weather also plays a big part. I enjoy watching Netflix or reading if it’s raining, and going to the beach if it’s sunny.
Any other anecdotes or stories about a time that you took a special pride in your work, or an interesting story about your time at Edlong? Maybe you solved a problem, tried something new or supported your co-workers to help them with something critical?
I have been lucky enough to spend time working in our U.S. and Mexico labs. During my visit to our lab in Cuernavaca we were working with a customer who spoke Portuguese, but no English. That evening, we went for dinner, and my colleague Isabel, who speaks Portuguese, left us to take a call. I can’t speak Portuguese—and anyone who knows me knows I am a chatterbox. So instead of sitting in silence, I used an app on my phone that translated what I said into Portuguese. Our customer ended up doing the same back to me in English! I am sure it was quite funny to watch, but we became fast friends and are still in contact today.
